Half-human and half-wyr, Pia Giovanni spent her life keeping a low profile among the wyrkind and avoiding the continuing conflict between them and their dark Fae enemies. But after being blackmailed into stealing a coin from the hoard of a dragon, Pia finds herself targeted by one of the most powerful-and passionate-of the Elder races.

Why I read this book?: This series was recommended to me a little while ago by the lovely ladies who blog together on The Book Vixen.

What I liked?: I really liked how this book started off. Pia has just stolen, which she was blackmailed into doing, from Dragos and is on her way to deliver the item to the “shithead” (aka her ex). Once Dragos figures out he’s been stolen from he goes into a rage and that is when interesting things start happening.

Pia Giovanni, has spent her whole life trying to keep under wraps that she’s half-human and half-wyr. She’s also spent her whole life purposely trying to avoid drama. She’s been on her own since her mother died when she was 19, she’s now 25. Then she meets Keith (aka the “shithead”) and that’s when her life starts to spiral out of control.

One thing that really drew me to Pia was that even though she is Dragos’ calming force she doesn’t take any of his handouts. She wants to keep her life her’s as much as she possibly can under the circumstances. She’s more than capable of taking care of herself and she makes no bones about showing that to Dragos.

Dragos Cuelebre has been around a long time, like since the beginning of the universe. He’s demanding. He’s also tall, dark and handsome AND VERY MUCH an Alpha. He’s so used to getting his way that he completely flipped his top when he was stolen from. Then Pia comes into his life and he’s thrown for a total loop because she won’t put up with any of his crap.

There is mystery and humor through out this book that kept it engaging and a total page turner for me. Pia’s heritage is revealed in the book and it was a shock to me. Though I will admit to being a little bit confused about whether Pia actually knew what her wyr-half really was. She knew enough that she kept as much information about herself to herself but I wasn’t 100% on if she knew “herself” as well as she seemed to think she did.

The romance in this book was really great in my opinion. In the beginning I thought it started on deceit but once Dragos and Pia got together things started to build at an even keel. What I really loved about the developement of the romance was that Pia didn’t let Dragos push her around and forced him to go at a pace that she was comfortable with.

What I disliked?: I got nothing!

Overall Impression: I think that this book is an excellent start to this series and I really want to thank the ladies over at The Book Vixen for recommending this series!

For thirty-five girls, the Selection is the chance of a lifetime. The opportunity to escape the life laid out for them since birth. To be swept up in a world of glittering gowns and priceless jewels. To live in the palace and compete for the heart of the gorgeous Prince Maxon.
But for America Singer, being Selected is a nightmare. It means turning her back on her secret love with Aspen, who is a caste below her. Leaving her home to enter a fierce competition for a crown she doesn’t want. Living in a palace that is constantly threatened by violent rebel attacks.
Then America meets Prince Maxon. Gradually, she starts to question all the plans she’s made for herself- and realizes that the life she’s always dreamed of may not compare to a future she never imagined.

The Selection how do I LOVE you?! Well, you know those cupcakes with the delicious frosting piled on top? You know the one’s that you know you SHOULDN’T have more than one of but by the time you’re done you’ve had 3 or 4 and you still want more? That is how much I LOVED The Selection. Not only was it delicious, I was left wanting MORE! Now I have to wait for what seems like an ETERNITY for book 2! :(

What I really liked about this book was that it’s classified as a Dystopian novel but it didn’t really have a Dystopian feel to it at all. It had “shades” of dystopia but not hardcore like say Legend or The Hunger Games. Yeah for A-Typical dystopian’s!

In the beginning I was sure how I felt about America. I kind of felt that at the beginning of the book America was maybe a little bit naive about some things…Mainly men and relationships. Then I thought that there were some things that America was right on the ball about…Life outside the palace walls, especially for lower caste citizens. Though as the book progressed I saw a lot of growth in America. Which made me really happy. :)

Can we talk about Aspen for a minute? I’m NOT a fan. I felt that in the beginning of the book Aspen was using America because she was a caste above him. She had a little more food readily available and she was more than willing to share, so felt he took advantage of the situation. Then things happen later in the book and as a result I’m EVEN LESS of a fan.

Maxon!? I’m definitely Team Maxon, all the way! When the ladies of The Selection move into the palace Maxon is WAY out of his element. To the point of being adorably awkward. Then America catches his eye and I want to be America. He showers her with a lot of attention and experiences several firsts with her. Even though Maxon is clearly attracted to America he does end up doing right by the other girls in The Selection as well.

Overall, I was BEYOND impressed with this book! It exceeded my expectations and I can hardly wait for the next book to come out. It has it all! Drama, romance, evil characters you just want to reach into the book and slap, and action to name a few things. If you haven’t picked up The Selection and read it yet DO SO RIGHT NOW!
